More watercolor fun with A Muse Studio and Peerless Watercolors

I’ve been continuing my exploration of watercolor and stamping, using my Peerless watercolor palette…

I created these birthday cards by using a die cut balloon as a stencil. I used one of the A Muse Studio balloon dies and cut a balloon shape out of a scrap of card stock. I then took a very light pencil and traced some balloons onto watercolor paper.

I used my Peerless watercolors to color in the balloons, being careful to let each color of balloon dry before moving onto the next (to avoid any unwanted blending of colors.) To speed up the drying, I used my Milwaukee heat tool.

I used a pencil and a t-square ruler to draw in the balloon strings and Copic markers and twinkle stickers to add some “confetti” to this version of the card. For the blue/green version of the card I used sequins to add “confetti”.

I really enjoyed working on these two cards and I’m sure I’ll use this technique for creating birthday cards in the future. If you have any questions I’d be happy to answer, just leave them in the comments!  Thanks for having a look today.

Color Challenge Wednesday No. 32 – Birthday

Geez… it’s been about a YEAR since I posted a color challenge so I am back today to offer you a cute card design in a fresh, summer color palette that works great for a variety of card themes. I chose birthday since I always seem to need a birthday card…

For this card I used A Muse Studio colors Buttercup, Sky, Mermaid and Apple with a little bit of Onyx as the neutral. I used the Bitty Banner dies to cut the banner shapes out of some of our patterned card stocks, including our new apple petite hex and our new sky reverse polka dots. The sentiment is from the Hooray stamp set. The little flower on the middle banner is from the Love and Thanks stamp set with coordinating dies. I finished it off with a pointed strip using the pinking border die in medium and a few of the new 4mm sequins in buttercup.

I hope you’ll give this color palette a try during your next card-making session–I feel happy just looking at this card!

In case you missed this little news flash from my last post… it’s coming and it’s better than ever! Can’t wait to share!

technique flash-back friday: stamp kissing…

A Muse Studio has this fun, new birthday stamp set called BIRTHDAY BALLOONS and I thought it would be the perfect set to showcase this fun stamping technique that I often forget about——stamp kissing!

stamp kissing a muse studio birthday balloons

For this card, I inked up the balloon image in lime ink and inked up a pattern image from the CHEVRON stamp set in cobalt ink. I took the lime balloon image and “kissed” it to the chevron image to transfer that cobalt ink to my balloon image and create that little blue zigzag on my balloon. ( THIS is a great video I found on YouTube that teaches easy stamp kissing techniques you can use with any solid and patterned stamp combinations.)

I used a fine-line black marker and the edge of a clear block to draw in the strings on the balloons and then added some cherry twinkle stickers for a little bit of shine.

It’s fun to dust off an old technique once in a while to jazz up your stamping… maybe this week you’ll give stamp kissing a try!

stained glass poppy series… card no. 1

Today, I thought I’d start a little series using the new stamp set called Stained Glass Poppy. This “set” is actually one, large image and brand new in the A Muse Studio 2014 catalog (you’ll find it on page 86).  I’ve been playing with this set and put together three cards, the first I’m sharing today, to show you some of the versatility of this bold image…PoppySeries-1

I started this card by stamping it twice, using Versamark ink and white embossing the poppy image onto a kraft card panel. I then took some watercolor pencils and colored some of the petal sections in blue. I applied water with my water brush tool and then went back over certain sections with more color after the first layer of color dried. You can layer as much color as you like… I kept playing with it but tried not to add too much water in an effort to keep my panel from warping too badly when it dried.

I really like how the white embossing makes the flowers pop off the panel, and the subtle watercolor adds just enough interest. I think this is a great summer birthday card!

I will be back on Thursday with Card no. 2 in the series…

clean and simple sunday no.70

I received the Mar/Apr issue of PaperCrafts magazine this week. When the issue comes, I grab my sticky notes and a pen and start going through it. I look for overall card designs or design elements that I love, I look for color combinations that strike me, I look for great use of embellishments that spark my own creativity, making notes on the stickies to use the magazine as a way to fuel my own creativity…

With that, I bring you this week’s clean & simple card design. If you too, have the latest issue of PaperCrafts, you’ll see that my design for today was inspired by the “hogs & kisses” card on page 36.

For my card above,  I used some of the retiring gingham card stock in bubblegum. I also used the medium butterfly from the Butterflies Trio die set and some of the new grapefruit baker’s cord to embellish. The sentiment is from the Essential Sentiments stamp set.

This card would be very quick and easy to replicate using different patterned (or solid!) card stocks and different die shapes to cut out, like stars for boys, hearts for Valentine’s or anniversary cards… or for any holiday using the dies from the candy box dies set.

A clean and simple design to start your week and another idea for building on that birthday card stash!

The ink I used — Memento black.  The frosting on each of the cupcakes is highlighted with various Copic markers and then dusted with glitter. I used the large circle, large scallop circle and scallop border dies to cut the circles and border scallop with my Sizzix.
